Spiral Wound Gaskets
Spiral wound gaskets are fabricated out of a thin metal strip form and can be welded. These SPW gaskets can be used against any corrosive medium dependent upon the choice of the metal and filler. They can be used from cryogenic to approximately 2000º degrees Fahrenheit temperature service.
ASME B16.20 which covers spiral wound gaskets requires the use of solid metal inner rings for Class 900# nominal pipe sizes 24” and larger, Class 1500# nominal pipe sizes 12” and larger with Class 1500# and Class 2500# nominal pipe sizes 4” and larger. Also all PTFE filled gaskets require the use of solid inner rings. ASME B16.20 recommends the use of inner rings for the following applications:
- Vacuum service or suction side of rotary equipment such as pumps and
compressors. - Aggressive media, high pressure or temperature.
- Surface finishes smoother than 125 micro-inch.
- If over compression of the gasket is a concern.
It is customary to select inner ring material to be the same as the metal winding. Spiralwound gaskets are available in a variety of styles to suit the particular flange facing being utilized on the flanges.
Non-Asbestos Gaskets
The glass and cellulose fiber based sheet with a blend of natural and nitrille rubber binder. This is ideal for hydrotesting and other low temperature, non-critical applications. The Gaskets with high quality aramid fiber sheet with an NBR binder, are excellent for sealing steam, water, gases, oils, mild solvents and/or alkalis.
Ring Type Joints Gaskets
RTJ (Ring Type Joint) gaskets are supplied in accordance with API-6A and ANSI B16.2 specifications. API ring joints come in two basic types, oval and an octagonal shape. These basic shapes are used in pressures up to 10,000 psi. The dimensions are standardized and require specially grooved flanges. The octagonal cross section has a higher sealing efficiency than the oval and would be the preferred gasket. RTJ’s have “R” numbers assigned to them for pipe size and pressure class identification. Our stock supply include soft iron, low carbon steel, 4-6 chrome (f5), 304, 304L, 316, 316L, 347, Monel, Inconel and Incoloy. Titanium Gaskets are made to order.
Ring Type Joints Gaskets with Rubber Coating
This is an oval ring type joint which is totally enclosed in a nitrile rubber coating. The ring type joint material is usually soft iron or low carbon steel. This type of gasket has three main functions: Normally, it is used in pressure testing to minimize damage to flanges. The rubber contact points provide additional seals while protecting the flange surfaces. It provides increased assurance against corrosion, which can occur between conventional ring type joints and the engaged surfaces of the groove.
